Sodium bicarbonate

commonly known as baking soda or bicarbonate of soda is a salt composed of a sodium cation (Na+) and a bicarbonate anion. Sodium bicarbonate is a white solid that is crystalline, but often appears as a fine powder. It has a slightly salty, alkaline taste resembling that of washing soda (sodium carbonate).

Applications

baking as a leavening agent, controlling fungal growth. for pools, spas, and garden ponds to raise the total alkalinity. to raise the pH level and make maintaining proper pH easier. the main components of the common “black snake” firework. To extinguish small grease or electrical fires. To neutralize unwanted acid solutions or acid spills in chemical labor-atories. Toothpaste containing sodium bicarbonate. As a cattle feed supplement, in par-ticular as a buffering agent for the rumen. Sodium bicarbonate is used in a process for removing paint and corrosion called soda-blasting; the process is particularly suitable for cleaning aluminum panels which can be distorted by other types of abrasives.
